My brother lives in Westmont, NJ just one town over from where I spent my junior and senior high school years. I attended Haddonfield Memorial High School and on my last visit to see my brother I decided to stop by and show my nearly 10 year old son, Nick, the school. We pulled up and the kids were just being let out for the day. A few faculty members were out front I presume to keep some order to the dismissal process.
As I did not want to appear strange taking pictures and walking around the grounds, I introduced myself to the adults. As it turned out they happened to be the principal, and vice principal. I told them I went to school here 20 years ago and I wanted to show my son around. We had a pleasant conversation and reminisced about some of the teachers I had, most of which have since retired.
They asked what I was doing for a living and in my normal shy fashion I told them. They were intrigued and even invited me back to speak to some of the students involved in business and entrepreneurial classes! Wow, what a reversal....if they do some research they will find what a pain in the rear I was in high school.
The point is there are opportunities lurking everywhere. Go back to your old relationships, clients, schools.....wherever. Old haunts prove fruitful.
