As a decision maker in today’s business climate, it’s more important than ever to know your options for success. One such option is outsourcing. Whether it’s outsourcing a single specific task, such as collecting on an overdue account, or outsourcing your entire accounts receivable function, the possibilities are endless!
To help you determine whether or not outsourcing may be for you, here are 3 core reasons for consideration:
1. Simplify Your Business – One rule of thumb to consider is to do what you do best and hire out the rest. Allow yourself to focus on what you originally got into your business to do. If you’re a medical doctor, maybe it was to heal people; if you’re an accountant, maybe it was to provide sound strategic tax advice and planning for your clients.
2. Reduce Your Overhead – It’s no secret that cutting costs has been on the minds of just about every decision maker regardless of their industry; most seemingly driven out of necessity by our turbulent market. Regardless of outside pressures though, it’s just smart business to continually evaluate options to become what we call at MAS, “lean and mean”. Tasks that you deem as a burden others may enjoy, and, may already have systems in place to accomplish them better, faster, and cheaper than you ever could.
3. Increase Scalability – With certain tasks or functions outsourced, you are ultimately left with more resources to grow and/or improve. As an example from my industry, once your medical billing function is being properly outsourced, you now have more resources to apply toward both improving your core skills, thus making you a better and more sought after healthcare provider, and taking on more patients, thus bringing in more revenue to your practice.
Now there are many more important reasons to consider outsourcing, however, only you can choose whether or not outsourcing makes sense for you. What worked for me was starting out small by simply choosing just a few tasks that I either didn’t do well or enjoy, and I outsourced those first. Then, as my comfort level grew, I continued to outsource more and more tasks and functions, ultimately, freeing me up to do the things that I love and do best!

Bill, Great insight. It's really important for entrepreneurs and small business owners to focus on their passion and skill sets and delegate the rest.
Outsourcing is a great way to expand your team without adding to your overhead. You can leverage the braintrust of others who are experts in their field so you can focus on doing what you do best.
Thanks for this great read. Nicole

Bill:
Your blog is both timely and cogent. As businesses, of various size and industry, strategize for renewed sustainability and/or growth in the challenged economy, outsourcing is a judicious option to consider. Use resources to become better at core competencies; hire for those skill sets and disciplines lacking that are critical to manifest the vision and goals of your business, and outsourcing often allows for that with efficiency, generating the ROI to be acheived.

Great article by Billy. This is so true and unfortunately too many out there do not follow this guidance. Thank you Bill.

Thanks for your comments. There is no doubt that outsourcing is the future of American small business. This is the way we will compete with the world and keep U.S jobs here. Thanks Glenn and Nicole, I also believe in the power of entrepreneurs. It a no brainer, when we focus on what we do best and hire the rest, we can all get the job done faster and cheaper. I am always surprised that there are people out there who love to do the very things we hate to doing. At home, I have someone else clean my house and cut my lawn (boring!) The best in the business do it with a smile on their face. Now let’s apply that logic to the business world. (Anyone like doing their own payroll or virus scans? I don’t!!) What are thinking about getting off your plate? Let us know!

Excellent point Billy - my company has just outsourced our IT department and it's working out great. We are all spending less time worrying about our computers and are able to concentrate on getting more work done.

Re: Guest Post: Do You Outsource? Here’s 3 Core Reasons Why You Should Consider It.
I often joke that I am a company of three people--me, myself and I. The problem is the other two don't do anything, and I get all the work.
Small business owners are required to wear many hats often causing stress levels to rise and energy, motivation and productivity to fall. Bill, your reasons for outsourcing definitely address these problems and help business owners reconnect to that spark they originally felt when they began in business. Stop allowing yourself to tolerate the functions in your business that slow you down and start considering outsourcing.
Thanks for the great information, Bill.
